Artificial Intelligence: Adopting the future

There are a lot of buzzwords floating around when it comes to technology, here’s one: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and another: Machine Learning (ML). Ever wondered what they really mean? For many, AI is automatically associated with Sci-Fi books and movies, smart machines that can think for themselves and take over the world! While, we are now able to teach machines to learn, they are not taking over the world just yet. Any programmable machine can demonstrate intellect by completing some of the same tasks as humans. Machines can produce mundane and repetitive tasks such as generating reports as well as slightly more complex task like communicating with customers through AI chatbots.

AI CAPABILITIES

AI is going full steam ahead with private and public entities alike adopting AI assistants. With machines generating reports, communicating with customers and performing other similar tasks, corporations and governments can benefit in many ways. Essentially, steering their employees towards other more creative aspects, therefore saving time, increasing productivity and reducing costs. At the same time, taking advantage of the 24/7 work capabilities that are not tied down by human limitations such as fatigue.

The tech giants have launched virtual assistants that use voice recognition: Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple’s Siri and Microsoft Cortana.

AI ASSISTANTS ON A BIGGER SCALE

There will come a point where establishments such as museums and city tours will get rid of rudimentary audio guides and instead provide AI assistants. Through an eye piece connected to an ear piece, the AI assistant will be able to see what you see and speak to you. AI assistants can recognize your location, and objects (such as paintings, exhibits or land marks), and convey the related information. They can also direct you to your next destination within the area, without the need to look for manual signs or ask for directions.

MACHINE LEARNING

Machine Learning, enables machines to make data-driven decisions on their own. Large amounts of data are fed into a machine, such as a patient’s medical history. The machine can analyze the data, find trends and make predictions. A hospital can input medical records, DNA tests, genetic information, medical tests and other supporting data. The bigger the data pool, the better the accuracy of the prediction.

Machines can aid doctors by predicting potential diseases before patients show symptoms, allowing them to call patients in for follow-up tests. Currently, machine learning is being used to detect Alzheimer’s disease. The success of this will open doors to infinite possibilities in the medical field. This can help save time, take some pressure off over-worked staff, reduce costs, and help doctors save lives.

Healthcare is just one industry where machine learning is making tremendous progress, these capabilities can be used in every industry. Therefore, setting a platform where corporations and governments can in the future, allot more responsibilities to machines.
